Most of the surgeries in the knee happens when you have an injury in the knee and you can't handle the pain from it.
These injuries could be the following:

  • Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) injury typically occurs when changing direction or jumping.
  • Medial Collateral Ligament (MCL) injury typically occurs from a blow to the inner part of the knee.
  • Posterior Cruciate Ligament (PCL) injury typically occurs from a blow to the front of the knee.
  • Lateral collateral ligament (LCL) injury typically occurs from a blow to the outside of the knee.
  • Cartilage injuries often refer to a torn meniscus which is the thick pad of cartilage between the leg bones. Cartilage also is found covering the bones lessening the friction when the joint moves.
  • Knee fractures.
  • Ruptured, torn or inflamed tendons in the knees.

Knee Surgery :
When you have a pain in the knee you should try to rest at home, put some ice on your knee, wrap the knee tightly with a bandage and try as possible to keep it high( elevated ). You should do this till your knee rests and then you should go and see a doctor.
Knee Surgery
Knee surgery is required when you have sharp injuries . there are several types of these surgeries :
  1. Arthroscopy : this type of surgery is done when the patient has torn cartilages and ligaments. What actually happens in this surgery is that small incisions are made above the area where the torn cartilages and ligaments are and a small arthroscope is inserted there to make the needed repairs to the knee.
  2. Torn ligaments needed to be replaced might be created from a tendon from another part of the body or could be taken from cadavers.
  3. Replacing the cartilages in the knee could be done through autologous chondrocyte implantation which is about growing a new one using the patients cells. This is in the younger patients to avoid joint replacement.
  4. The last one is the replacement of the knee's joint. Here the joint is replaced with a prosthetic made of plastic and metal. The whole knee or part of it could be replaced depending on the condition of the injury.Healing from replacing the Knee takes a long time, and requires a continues physical therapy.
